In 1923, at the age of seventeen, Johnson attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where he enrolled in a cartooning class taught by Frank Willard.
Johnson was employed at the Chicago Tribune as an assistant to Frank Willard from 1923 until 1958. In addition to the Moon Mullins cartoons, Johnson also was a sports illustrator for the Chicago Tribune, and created the Texas Slim and Lovey Dovey comic strips. He was also an avid painter whose works have been exhibited in art galleries in California. Johnson worked at the Chicago Tribune until 1991. Johnson died on October 14, 1996.

Ferd married Doris Lee White on February 24, 1930. The couple had a child, Thomas Johnson.
