Fernando del Paso Morante was born on April 1, 1935, in Mexico City, Mexico.
Fernando del Paso attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
During his time in London, del Paso worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation. While in France, he worked for Radio France Internationale and briefly served as Consul General of Mexico and cultural attaché at the Embassy of Mexico in Paris. Then, he was director at Bibliotheca Iberoamericana Octavio Paz in Guadalajara, Mexico. Also, in 1973, del Paso began painting, eventually exhibiting his work in both Europe and the United States.
In 1958, Fernando published Sonetos de lo diario ("Everyday Sonnets"). His first novel, José Trigo (1966), won him critical acclaim in both Mexico and the United States. The time period of this 900-page masterpiece, which traces the long history of the area north of what is now Puebla, Mexico, ranges from the prehistoric era to the 1960s. Palinuro de México (1977; Palinuro of Mexico) is a freewheeling, humorous novel in which del Paso creates an entire semi-magical universe. Noticias del Imperio (1987; "News from the Empire") is a re-creation of Mexican history, narrated in part by a madwoman who has witnessed 60 years of political and social upheaval, that blends realism with fantasy and horror; the novel has been called one of the most important works of Mexican literature.
In 1988 del Paso published a book of children's poetry, De la A a la Z por un poeta ("From A to Z by a Poet"). His later works included Paleta de diez colores (1992) and Linda 67: Historia de un crimen (1995), among others.
Del Paso was a member of El Colegio Nacional de México.
As a writer, Fernando was influenced by James Joyce, William Faulkner, and Carlos Fuentes, among others.
Fernando del Paso was married to Socorro Gordillo.
