To 28 a student and man of letters, and acquired a knowledge of 25 or 26 classic, Oriental, and modern languages and dialects. Events threw on own resources. Started as an operative in a factory.
Then manager, overseer, merchant.
Saw financial opening in 1882 in the collapse of the South America Diamond Mines. Organised, as originator, and carried through the Diamond Mines Monopoly, called De Beers Company.
Made a large fortune, but rascally lawyer bolted with his money, 1893. Buckled up and set to work again.
