KOLESSA, Filaret was born on July 17, 1871 in village Khodovichi. now L’vov Oblast.
Graduate Philological Faculty, L’vov University. Completed postgraduate studies in Vienna.
1898-1930 worked as high-school teacher. From 1939 professor, L'vov University. Director, L’vov Branch, Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnography, Ukraine Academy of Sciences.
Director, L’vov Ethnographical Museum. Wrote numerous studies of Ukraine and Slavic folklore and compiled several anthologies of Ukraine folk Songs. Wrote choral arrangements of poems by T. G. Shevchenko.
Maintained contacts with the foremost representative of Ukraine lit and folklore and with Ukraine, Russian and for specialists in this field. Wrote valuable studies of N. V. Lysenko, 1. Ya. Franko and Lesya Ukrainka.
Attended international congresses of folklorists and music historians.
Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, 1929.
