Filippo Antonio Cifariello

Background

Cifariello was born in Apulien, Italy, on July 3, 1864.

Career

Filippo Cifariello represented the school of Neapolitan realism. Inspired by Vincenzo Gemito, Cifariello was one of the most active neoclassical sculptors of his time. He produced his artworks in bronze, marble, terracotta, and silver.

The obscene lifestyle of his first wife caused him to leave Italy. He moved with her to Passau in 1895, where he worked at the Lenck porcelain factory and became known as a major porcelain artist. In 1901 Cifariello returned to Italy with huge savings. There he was able to achieve professional success.

In 1931 Filippo Cifariello published his autobiography entitled Tre vite in una.

Achievements

  Filippo Cifariello was notable for his numerous artworks, especially sculptures. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including his La Sciantosa, which was sold at Minerva Auctions "Old Master Paintings & 19th Century Art" in 2016 for $6,290.
  
  Some of his art pieces now can be found in the museums of Budapest, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Naples, Rome, Teano, Molfetta and Bari.

Filippo Cifariello married Maria Browne, a French singer, who had a stage name Bianca de Mercy, in 1894. On August 13, 1905, he killed her out of jealousy with a revolver. Cifariello remarried in some years, but his second wife, Evelina Fabi, died in 1914, because of the severe burns from the gas stove. Filippo Cifariello remarried for the third time. His last marriage produced two sons.
