Zéphir graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New York as a Bachelor of Arts in 1980. She received her Master of Arts degree in applied linguistics and Master of Arts degree in French Linguistics from Indiana University—Bloomington, both in 1983. Zéphir also earned Doctor of Philosophy degree in French Linguistics from Indiana University—Bloomington in 1990.
Zéphir was appointed to Indiana University—Bloomington in 1982, working as an associate instructor in French till 1986. Simultaneously, she served as a lecturer at Creole Institute in summers of 1982-1983. She then moved to Virginia Commonwealth University as an instructor in French from 1986 to 1988. Zéphir was an assistant professor of French language and linguistics at the University of Missouri—Columbia for two years from 1988. Her next working position was at the University of Delaware, where she was an assistant professor of French and coordinator for foreign language education just for a year from 1990.
Zéphir then returned to the University of Missouri—Columbia, taking a position of an assistant professor from 1991 to 1997, rising to an associate professor of French, linguistics, curriculum and instruction that same year. She also held a position of a coordinator for foreign language education there from 1991. Zéphir was department chair at the University of Missouri—Columbia from the fall of 2008 to the summer of 2014. She was also a director of the Afro-Romance Institute at the University from August 2008 to December 2016.
Additionally, Zéphir was a lecturer at colleges and high schools, translator and interpreter for state and local offices in Virginia, and workshop leader and consultant during her career. She was a contributor of articles and reviews to academic journals, including Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Research in Race and Ethnic Relations, and French Review.
Zéphir is the author of three books - Haitian Immigrants in Black America: A Sociological and Sociolinguistic Portrait, Trends in Ethnic Identification Among Second-Generation Haitian immigrants in New York City, and The Haitian Americans.

2001Zéphir was a member of the Modern Language Association of America, Linguistic Society of America, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, American Association of Teachers of French, National Association for Bilingual Education, Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics, American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators of Foreign Language Programs, Foreign Language Association of Missouri and Phi Delta Phi.
Zéphir was warm, kind and devoted to others.
Zéphir is survived by a son Bambi Zéphir Michel.
