Frances Hendry was born on April 27, 1941, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. She is the daughter of Iain Newall, a teacher, and Mysie Matheson.
Frances attended Jordanhill Teacher Training College and received a Master of Arts from Glasgow University.
Frances Hendry was a teacher of English and French in Scotland for over twenty years. She has also run a small guest house which only had visitors in the summer, which meant she could write all winter. Until 1986 the only writing she had done was pantomimes for her local drama club - something she still enjoys doing.
Hendry submitted her first story to the first BBC "Quest for a Kelpie" writing competition in 1986 and won first prize - the book took its name from the competition. Her next works were Quest for a Maid and Quest for a Queen. All three form a triology and won strong words of praise from reviewers for their believable characterizations and dramatic narrative structure.
Frances has subsequently had 18 books published, most of which are historical fiction for young adults; historically accurate, with imaginary young people inserted into them. Two of them are fantasy, and two are for younger readers.

2013"All my books have two messages for my readers. First, that as Oliver Cromwell told Parliament, it is possible they may be wrong, so that bullying, fanaticism and prejudice, whether racial, religious, sexual, social or of any other variety, have absolutely no moral validity. And secondly, to take what the world throws at them and get on with it, noli vos carborundum illegitimi. Simple? Well, I was only a remedial teacher."
Frances married Alexander Hendry, a steel erector, in 1968. They have one daughter, Jennifer.
