Background

James was born on November 22, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, in the family of Daisyann Lenert Elward and Joseph Francis Elward. He was the brother to Paul Elward.

Education

A native of Chicago, James received a bachelor's degree in 1950 from The Catholic University of America in Washington.

Career

Elward was an author of plays, television scripts, and novels, who received high praise when he completed the autobiographical novel of fashion executive Helen Van Slyke after her death.

During his career, Elward was a writer of television programs for NBC, CBS, and ABC, beginning in 1956. He also acted in various theatrical productions. In addition he wrote plays, such as Upbeat, Friday Night, and Best of Friends.

Achievements

• James was most noted for writing soap operas in the 1960s and 1970s such as The Secret Storm, The Guiding Light, and Dr. Kildare.
