(A trio of eminent Old Testament scholars--Francis Brown, ...)
A trio of eminent Old Testament scholars--Francis Brown, R. Driver, and Charles Briggs--spent over twenty years researching, writing, and preparing "The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon." Since it first appeared in the early part of the twentieth century, BDB has been considered the finest and most comprehensive Hebrew lexicon available to the English-speaking student. Based upon the classic work of Wilhelm Gesenius, the "father of modern Hebrew lexicography," BDB gives not only dictionary definitions for each word, but relates each word to its Old Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. BDB's exhaustive coverage of Old Testament Hebrew words, as well as its unparalleled usage of cognate languages and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render BDB and invaluable resource for all students of the Bible.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Francis Brown was born on December 26, 1849 in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of Sarah (Van Vechten) and Samuel Gilman Brown.
Francis graduated from Dartmouth in the class of 1870 and after teaching for four years entered Union Theological Seminary, graduating there in 1877.
Awarded a traveling fellowship he spent the next two years in study in Berlin. He was the favorite pupil and most devoted disciple of Dr. Charles A. Briggs and he followed him in making the Old Testament his special subject of study.
In 1879 Francis Brown returned to America to become instructor and later associate professor of Biblical philology in Union Seminary. In 1890 when Dr. Briggs was transferred to the chair of Biblical theology Brown succeeded him as professor of Hebrew and the cognate languages, a position he held until his death. For some years he taught in the Seminary not only Hebrew and Greek but also Aramaic and Assyrian.
In 1885 he published a little book on Assyriology, Its Use and Abuse, declaring that "The root of the misuse of Assyriology in Bible study" was "an ill-directed and excessive Apologetics. " In 1907 he gave a course of public lectures at the Seminary (the Ely Lectures) on the relations of Israel with Babylonia and Assyria, but unfortunately the lectures were never published.
The lasting monument of his scholarship is the great Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, completed in 1906, of which he was the editor-in-chief and to which he devoted more than twenty years. During all those years it consumed the major part of his time and attention and kept him from publishing many other works which he had planned. While primarily a scholar, he became interested in ecclesiastical affairs as a result of the controversy over Dr. Briggs.
In 1908 upon the death of Charles Cuthbert Hall he succeeded him as president of Union Seminary and though he retained his professorship and continued his teaching, his days of productive scholarship were over.
His great-grand-father, John H. Mason, had been president of Dickinson College, his grandfather, Francis Brown, of Dartmouth, and his father of Hamilton, so that he came of presidential stock. He himself was called to the presidency of Dartmouth but declined, preferring to remain at Union. His administration there was notable.
In 1910 the Seminary moved to its new site on Morningside Heights opposite Columbia University, and the affiliation between the two institutions became even closer than it had been. Under him the endowment of the Seminary was greatly increased and both the faculty and student body were enlarged by more than a half.

Throughout the struggle he was Briggs's right hand man and supported him loyally, and after the latter left the Presbyterian Church Brown became a recognized leader of the liberal Presbyterian group.
Brown was a man of strong convictions, but with all the firmness which these gave him he was yet considerate of the opinions of others and was always slow to express dissent. It was quite in accord with his general spirit and attitude that he interested himself in the cause of church unity.
From the beginning Brown displayed those qualities as a scholar which were to make him eminent--untiring diligence, painstaking accuracy, absolute fairness, maturity of judgment, careful weighing of evidence, caution in drawing and stating conclusions. He was not a rapid worker like his teacher Dr. Briggs, and he was not given to venturesome hypotheses, but his scholarship was solid and sound. As a teacher his influence was invigorating and wholesome and he had the unqualified respect of his students. No one could come under him without having his ideals of scholarship heightened and his conscience as a scholar quickened.
Brown had a massive frame and great personal dignity. Many thought him unapproachable and it is true that he was not a man of easy intimacies. It was often difficult to get beyond the barrier of his reserve, but no one ever had a kinder heart or readier sympathy. He was a tower of strength yet extraordinarily gentle, full of generosity and quick to help where help was needed.
In 1879 Francis Brown married Louise Reiss of Berlin.
