Little is known of his early career, but in 1851 he was first elected president.In 1856, as vice president of El Salvador, he was one of the leaders of the struggle against the North American filibusterer William Walker, who had seized control of Nicaragua.
Dueñas’ third period in office was as president of El Salvador between 1863 an 1871. However, he was overthrown by a coup, put on trial, and though exonerated, driven into exile. He died abroad sometime after 1875.
