Taking an individual approach, this book focuses on the concepts underlying chemical physics. It presents the essence of a connected theory rather than mere explanations of apparently unrelated facts, helping readers to understand chemical phenomena in terms of the most fundamental laws of physics.

The subject of this text is the mathematical formalism (whose structure and foundations are examined in detail) of most of nonrelativistic physics, with emphasis on fundamental principles rather than concrete applications. The text has been written for senior undergraduate/graduate students in chemistry, mathematics and engineering who, although requiring sound foundations in many advanced topics in physics (many-body theory, classical and quantized field theory, and quantum electrodynamics), do not usually have the opportunity of taking the same formal courses as their colleague physicists. However many physics students, at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate stage, could well profit from reading these notes. The text is divided into two parts. Part I on classical physics covers the following major areas: Newtonian mechanics; Lagrangian mechanics; Hamiltonian mechanics; Canonican description of fields; and electromagnetic field. Part 2 on quantum physics covers: mathematical formalism; physical interpretation; one-dimensional systems; angular momentum; many-body systems; electromagnetic field; and special relativity. This book is intended for students of chemistry, physics and engineering taking courses in quantum mechanics, chemical physics, theoretical chemistry and quantum chemistry.
