He was born in 1688 in Paris, France.
He studied under Louis Galloche at the Royal Academy.
In 1723 he traveled in Italy, interrupting for seven months a huge decorative work which he had begun in Paris, the Transfiguration in the Church of St. Thomas Aquinas; his decoration of the vault of the Salon d'Hercule at Versailles is another splendid example of his style. Lemoyne produced many easel pictures as well as decorations, his subject matter in both categories being usually religious or drawn from Classical mythology.
He appears to have been driven by an unremitting ambition, and though he received appreciation and recompense, he was so disturbed by his competitors, especially J. F. de Troy, that he finally committed suicide, June 4, 1737. Francois Boucher, his pupil, was much influenced by Lemoyne's fine color.
He had a wife, her death drove him to madness.
