Frank J. Cerny was born on June 10, 1946, in Dayton, Ohio, United States, to Frank Cerny, a physician, and Viola (McNeil) Cerny, a homemaker.
In 1968, Cerny received a Bachelor of Science from Macalester College and a Doctor of Philosophy in sports medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. He also conducted a postdoctoral research at the University of Freiburg.
Before coming to the University at Buffalo, Cerny was an assistant professor of human kinetics at the University of Windsor. Then, in 1976, he became a faculty member of the University at Buffalo, when he was appointed a research assistant professor of pediatrics and associate director of the Children's Lung Center at Children's Hospital of Buffalo (now John R. Oishei Children's Hospital).
Frank was named an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Exercise Science of the University at Buffalo in 1985 and was promoted to an associate professor in 1991. Cerny also served as director of the department's doctoral program. He retired from the University at Buffalo in 2004.
Dr. Cerny has authored or co-authored numerous articles and abstracts in refereed journals and has contributed chapters to nine books. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is on the editorial board for Pediatric Pulmonology and ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal.
Besides, Cerny also served as an assistant pastor at Eden United Methodist Church.
It's also important to note, that, currently, Frank holds the post of the executive director of the Rural Outreach Center.
Dr. Frank J. Cerny is best known as the Executive Director of the Rural Outreach Center. Cerny has an established scientific reputation in the areas of understanding the exercise response in patients with cystic fibrosis and in developing programs for these patients as part of their treatment. He has conducted pioneering research on the effect of exercise on cystic fibrosis. His work led to the incorporation of regular exercise into treatment programs for this disease.
He is a contributor of articles to professional journals, including Pediatrics, Ergonomics, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, Physical Therapy, and Physician and Sportsmedicine. His best-known written work is Exercise Physiology for Health Care Professionals (2001).
In 2016, Cerny was honored as the recipient of the University at Buffalo Alumni Association's Leadership Award.
