Cushing began employment at the Boston Herald and Traveler on October 1, 1932, where he worked at the display desk. He later became a staff photographer, retiring May 13, 1968. After his retirement from the paper he went to work as a painter for the Fore River Shipyard, where he became a foreman shortly before his retirement from there. During World War II he flew a string of combat missions with the Army Air Corps as an aerial photographer.
During his years as a photojoumalist, he belonged to the Boston Press Photographers Association.
