Walbank studied Classics at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and from 1951 to 1977 was Rathbone Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Liverpool.
He was also professor emeritus at Liverpool and an Honorary Fellow of Peterhouse. He held visiting positions at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
