Worked on farm in ’40s. Was waiter boy, hodcarrier and stage driver in Pennsylvania in early ’50s. Learned printing business.
Went to Kansas, 1857.
Early in 1863 was express messenger on the Overland Stage Lincolnshire, Atchison, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado. Later traveling mail agent for 650 miles on the eastern division of the stage line from Missouri River to Denver.
Made 32 trips across the plains on the “Concord” stagecoach, in 1863-1865. Became publisher and conducted 8 weekly and daily newspapers in Kansas and Colorado, 1865-1893.
Republican; cast first presidential vote for Abraham Lincoln, in 1860, going from Kansas Territory, 1,500 miles to Pennsylvania to vote.
