(Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part...)
Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Handbook of Birds of Eastern North America: ...)
Excerpt from Handbook of Birds of Eastern North America: With Keys to the Species and Descriptions of Their Plumages, Nests, and Eggs, Their Distribution and Migrations and a Brief Account of Their Haunts and Habits With Introductory Chapters on the Study of Ornithology, How to Identify Birds and How to Collect If this book had been written in the last century it might have been entitled "Ornithology made Simple, or How to Identify Birds with Ease, Certainty, and Dispatch." It may be unworthy so comprehensive a title, nevertheless I have made an honest endeavor to write a book on birds so free from technicalities that it would be intelligible without reference to a glossary, and I have tried to do this in a volume which could be taken afield in the pocket. I have not addressed an imaginary audience, nor have I given my prospective readers what, theoretically, I thought they ought to have, but what personal experience with students of birds has led me to believe would meet their wants. The preparation of this work has firmly convinced me that the poet would have been nearer the truth had he written "One touch of nature makes the whole world kind" In the succeeding pages I have attempted to express my appreciation of the assistance which naturalist friends and associates have generously given me, but here I desire to especially thank Miss Florence A. Merriam, Dr. J. A. Allen, and Mr. Ernest E. Thompson for much valuable criticism and advice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Economic Clatae of Pir fe to tl)e v$tate. By FRANK M. CHAPMAN ASSOCIATE CURATOR OF MAMMOLOGV AND ORNITHOLOGY IN THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. Tf)e ird and the 3fate. THE bird is the property of the State. From this fundamental conception of the birds legal status there can be no logical ground for dissent. If a certain species of bird is conclusively proven to be injurious to the agricultural or other interests of the State, no one would deny the States right to destroy that species. I f, on the contrary, a species is shown to be beneficial, then the State has an equal right to protect it. I ndeed, we may go further and say it is not only the right, but the duty of the State to give to its birds the treatment they deserve. Here is the great Commonwealth of New York with agricultural and forestry industries which annually yield products valued at $266,000,000. In the closest relation to the welfare of these industries stands a group of animals represented by some 350 species and millions of individuals. Obviously, then, it is the first duty of the State to learn definitely in what way or ways the presence of these incalculably abundant creatures affects its crops and forests. If they are harmful how are they to be destroyed? If they are valuable how are they to be preserved? In short, the State should take all necessary steps to appraise its vast possessions in bird-life. The government at Washington realizes the importance of this subject and in 1886 it established, in the Department of A griculture, a Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammology, with the object of learning accurately the economic relations of birds and mammals to man. I llinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, among the States, have made investigations with the same end in view. Now the South is awakening to the vital importance of this pract (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

(Excerpt from Our Winter Birds: How to Know and How to Att...)
Excerpt from Our Winter Birds: How to Know and How to Attract Them Plates I and II contain all the commoner (and some of the rarer) winter land birds of the northeastern United States. They are arranged on shelves as if they were displayed in a museum case. In fact, the idea for illustrations grew from a seasonal collection of birds which many years ago the author placed on exhibition in the American Museum of Natural History. The figures are small, but so accurately has Mr. Sawyer drawn them that minute details of form and color are shown as effectively as though the birds were much larger. The great advantage of these figures over most bird illustrations is that all those in the same case are drawn to the same scale. (The scale in Plate II being slightly larger than in Plate I.) One can therefore gain a better idea of actual size from these drawings than is possible when the Crow and Kinglet, for example, are made of equal size. Furthermore, this plan permits of the direct comparison of one species with another, while a glance at the two plates gives one a comprehensive conception of our winter bird-life. Chapman was born in West Englewood, New Jersey and attended Englewood Academy.
He joined the staff of the American Museum of Natural History in 1888 as assistant to Joel Asaph Allen. In 1901 he was made associate Curator of Mammals and Birds and in 1908 Curator of Birds. Chapman came up with the original idea for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count.
He also wrote many ornithological books such as, Bird Life, Birds of Eastern North America, Bird Studies With a Camera, and Life in an Air Castle.
In the winter seasons, starting from his mother"s home in Gainesville, Florida, he made numerous field trips to collect small mammals and birds. Thus he went to various localities in Florida, Texas, Cuba, Trinidad, B. West. I., Yucatan and Vera Cruz, Mexico, and later to many countries in South America.
The story of his local expeditions in the United States and of his one visit to England is told in his Camps and Cruises of an Ornithologist (1908) and much later his many expeditions to Mexico, Central and South America are dealt with in his all too brief, authentic Autobiography of a Bird Lover Chapman fathered one child, Frank Chapman, Junior., who first married playwright Elizabeth Cobb and had a daughter, actress and television personality Buff Cobb, and after divorcing married mezzo-soprano opera singer Gladys Swarthout. Chapman was interred at Brookside Cemetery.
