Helmerson was born in 1945 and by the age of 8 began playing cello.
Later on, he studied at University of Gothenburg and in both Rome and London.
His first concert was in Stockholm, Sweden after which he traveled throughout Europe, Asia, United States, and Russia. He also worked as a conductor with various Scandinavian orchestras and the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia where he still present. From 2011 to 2012 he was a guest professor at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" where he currently plays a cello of Domenico Montagnana.
He published his Dvorak Concerto under Bank for International Settlements Records label which was praised a lot by critics and later on he, along with a conductor of Russian State Symphony Capella, Valery Polyansky, published both Shostakovich"s cello concertos which too got acclaim among critics.
