Fred E. Coy was born on October 27, 1923, in El Paso, Texas, United States. He was a son of Fred E. Coy, Sr, a college professor, his mother was also a college professor.
Coy graduated from the Fern Creek High School in 1942 and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Louisville in 1950.
Coy was enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp in 1943. His first assignment was in the European Theater of Operations where he flew 130 combat missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt in the 9th Air Force as squadron leader.
Coy started his career at Tampa Municipal Hospital as an intern. In 1989 he contributed much charitable time to Kosair Children's Hospital. He joined the University of Louisville as a resident in orthopedic surgery from 1953 to 1957. He then had as a private practice of orthopedic surgery from 1957 till his retirement in 1989. He also served in the United States Army Air Forces as a fighter pilot during the Second World War.
Coy served in the European theater. During the Korean War, he was a physician in the United States Army.
Coy was a founding member of the George Rogers Clark Press. He regarded as an expert on Kentucky's Native American petroglyphs and passionate about their preservation and documentation. He was also an authority and frequent lecturer on Kentucky wildflowers.
In addition, Coy was the author and contributor to several books, as well as a contributor to medical journals and periodicals, including Central States Archaeological Journal, Tennessee Anthropologist, Forest and Conservation History and Tennessee Archaeologist.

1981Coy was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Rock Art Research Association, the Society for American Archaeology, the Filson Club, the Australian Rock Art Research Association, the Southeastern Archaeological Conference, the Tennessee Anthropological Association, the Indiana Historical Society, as well as the Kentucky Historical Society. Additionally, he was a member and past president of the Eastern States Rock Art Research Association, and a member of the American Heritage Council and the Old Mill Association.
Coy married Emily Jean Ellison on June 17, 1950. He is survived by three children - Fred E. III, Karen Jean and Emily Kim.
