Fred S. Kleiner was born on April 29, 1948, in New York City, New York, United States.
Kleiner graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree (with honours) in 1968. He then obtained his master's degree and a doctorate at Columbia University in 1969 and 1973, respectively.
Kleiner started his career as an assistant professor at the University of Virginia in 1975. In three years, he went to Boston University, where he has been working, first, as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor and since 1986, as a professor of history and archaeology there.
During his career, Kleiner was also an editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology from 1985 to 1998.
