Richard Allen Landes was born on June 26, 1949 in Neuilly-sur-seine, Ile-de-France, France. The son of the late Harvard Professor of Economics and History David S. Landes and Sonia T. Landes.
Landes graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. He attended Ecole Norinale Superieure in 1972. Landes received his Master of Arts in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984 from Princeton University.
Landes was an assistant professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, from 1986 to 1991. Then he worked at Boston University, Boston, MA, since 1991, began as assistant professor, later became associate professor of history. Landes was the director of the now quiescent Center for Millennial Studies. He currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of History at Boston University.
Richard married Paula Fredriksen on June 15, 1980. They have 3 children: Aliza, Noa, Hannah.
