At twenty-two, John Signal is old enough to have been in a shooting scrape. It was a fair fight, but the man he killed was well-connected. Sheriff Peter Ogden, rather than pursuing the thief, Alias he will make him a deputy if he succeeds in retrieving his horse. Alias manages to get his horse back, but not without violence. Sheriff Ogden makes good on his promise while explaining the local power structure. The Bone faction is behind most of the crimes in the district. On the other side is Town Marshal Fitzgerald Eagan, his brothers, and consumptive gambler and gunman Major Paul Harkness. Of the two, Sheriff Ogden is partial to the Bones faction and advises Alias to follow suit. But Alias is impressed with Eagan, especially when the marshal sides with Alias in a gunfight with two assassins from the Bones faction. Alias’s escape from the trap makes the Bones faction more determined than ever to do him in and the Eagans—who turn out to be just as crooked and bloodthirsty as the Bones faction—more anxious than ever to have him join them. A gunman agrees to do a rich man’s dirty work in this classic Western from one of the genre’s early masters Donnegan is not proud of his past. But when words ran dry and matters could only be settled with a gun, he never hesitated to make things right. Now fate has led him to The Corner, a wide-open gold-mining town in the valley where two rivers join. An invalid by the name of Colonel Macon wants Donnegan to settle a long-standing land claim that’s been taken over by outlaws. Charmed by the colonel’s beautiful daughter, the gunman agrees. But nothing is as it seems in The Corner, where the line separating good from evil is so badly blurred it might not be there at all. A contemporary of Zane Grey and a major influence on Louis L’Amour, Max Brand was a true master of the Western. Gunman’s Reckoning is a fine example of the moral complexity, fluid prose, and nonstop action that defines the best of his work. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices. (He was still a young man, but he’d used that handful of y...)
He was still a young man, but he’d used that handful of years effectively, building a bad reputation that spanned the West, his villainy taking different forms everywhere it took roost. Denver knew him as the Doctor; Texans called him Montana; and folks in Idaho called him Texas. On account of his youth, most everywhere else called him the Lonesome Kid. But when he finally gets arrested for vagrancy, he tells the sheriff his name is Alfred Lamb. Will that identity stick when he tries to help a rancher battle off a pack of cattle rustlers? With a lengthy career in pulps, comics, and early cinema, and with over two hundred full-length Western novels to his credit, including Destry Rides Again and Montana Rides and the iconic Dr. Kildare series, Max Brand’s action-filled stories of adventure and heroism in the American West continue to entertain readers throughout the world.

Tom Converse was the kind of man to pull a Colt from his back pocket faster than the seasoned gunslingers could draw from a hip holster. It seemed to come easy to him—like breathing in and out. But was he also the kind of man to make a whole town trigger-happy with fear? Did he hide behind a dark mask and come back for vengeance? Was he The Shadow? Sylvia didn't think so. "I'm the only one who knows the face of the real Shadow," she said. A dappled chestnut with black points is the only clue to the identity of a town's secret horror. It could be a case of mistaken identity, but yet again... This early Max Brand classic features the mysterious and ambiguous figure of The Shadow, a masked and lonely gunslinger who foreshadows great Western legends like Zorro and the Lone Ranger.

(Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific nov...)
Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific novelists and author of such enduring works as Destry Rides Again and the Doctor Kildare stories, died on the Italian front in 1944 without having published his one work of nonfiction. Now after more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalcanal in 1942 has been set in print. One of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as well as with Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts about fear, courage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find would never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadron veterans and the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive power of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legacy of personal insights into one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War.

Prolific in many genres he wrote historical novels, detective mysteries, pulp fiction stories and many more. Many of his stories would later inspire films.

Mr. Faust was born in Seattle, Washington, United States, on May 29, 1892. He was a son of Gilbert Leander Faust and Louisa Elizabeth (Uriel) Faust, both of whom died when Faust was still a boy.
Frederick Faust endured a childhood of poverty and instability. During his teenage years he worked as a farmhand on a succession of ranches in California’s San Joaquin Valley. In his spare time Mr. Faust read literary classics, including Thomas Malory’s Morte d’Arthur, the works of William Shakespeare, and Greek and Roman mythology.
According to biographers, Mr. Faust’s early sense of financial insecurity and intellectual isolation led him to pursue success as a writer. With the guidance and financial help of a relative, Faust was able to enter the University of California at Berkeley. There he held positions on both the school newspaper and literary magazine, in which he published satirical attacks on university Policies. As a result of his conflict with the university administration, he was denied a degree in 1915.
During the 1910s, Frederick Faust sold stories to the pulp magazines of Frank Munsey, including All-Story Weekly and Argosy Magazine. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, Mr. Faust tried to enlist but was rejected.
Mr. Faust settled in New York and became a writer for pulp rnagazines in 1917, writing westerns to.support himself while trying to establish a reputation as a poet, to the early 1920s Frederick Faust became a regular contributor to Western Story Magazine, which often ran as many as three serials simultaneously in a single issue under three different pseudonyms. In 1921, he suffered a severe heart attack, and for the rest of his life suffered from chronic heart disease.
He moved to Italy in 1926 and continued his prolific output, which included not only westerns but spy and detective stories, historical fiction, and poetry collections.
In 1934 Mr. Faust began to write for upscale, slick magazines, often writing from a villa in Italy. In 1938, due to political events in Europe, adapting his own work for motion pictures, most notably the Dr. Kildare series and his novel Destry Rides Again. In 1944 he was hired by Harper’s to chronicle American military operations in Europe during World War II. That same year he was killed in the course of an Allied offensive in Italy.
Because of Mr. Faust’s emphasis on heroes, adventure, and superhuman feats of strength, critics have called his novels adult fairy tales. He typically did not attempt realistic characterization, instead investing his protagonists with mythical qualities.
