Frederick Timmerman was born on July 29, 1942, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, United States. He is a son of Frederick W. and Myra R. Timmerman.
Frederick Timmerman studied at the United States Military Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1965. He also attended Duke University where he received a Master of Arts degree in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1974.
Frederick Timmerman started his career as a career officer in the United States Army in 1965. He held this post until 1989 and then he became an executive director of corporate research at the United Services Automobile Association and in 1994 he was appointed a director of member relations.
Timmerman worked at the United Services Automobile Association until 1998 and then he started as an executive responsible for application transition management at Computer Sciences Corporation. He also served as a speechwriter and assistant political advisor. In 2007, he became a professor at Queen's University where he taught a Senior Level Undergraduate Seminar in Operations Management until 2012. Timmerman also served as an assistant professor of management and leadership at West Point.
Frederick Timmerman wrote his first book Leadership and Command at Senior Levels in 1987. In 1999 he published his next book Winning the Information Game: Seven Steps to Market Domination. He was a contributor to professional journals, including Best's Review and Journal of Retail Banking Services. Timmerman served as an editor in chief in Military Review from 1985 to 1987.
