(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

(Begun as a critique of J.S. Mill, Hawley's first and most...)
Begun as a critique of J.S. Mill, Hawley's first and most important work evolved into a significant original contribution to the theory of the risk-taking entrepreneur as a principal factor of production, and concomitantly, to the risk theory of profit. J.A. Schumpeter admired Hawley's work for its focus on the entrepreneur and appraised it, together with the work of Frank H. Knight, as the most successful development of Mill's element of risk. Hawley also contributed to the theory of underconsumption and took a radical stance towards maldistribution of income. "An original and rigorous thinker, Hawley anticipated much that has since found acceptance in economic theory." Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences

(My position as an economist, as exemplified in this treat...)
My position as an economist, as exemplified in this treatise, is a peculiar one. While classing myself, I believe justly, as a strict disciple of what is usually called theE nglish or orthodox school, I have arrived at results, in many instances, diametrically opposed to theirs; especially on the subjects of free trade and taxation. On the other hand, my reasoning presupposes the falsity of most of the arguments heretofore advanced in support of the very conclusions I uphold. As I antagonize the results of one side and the methods of the other, I can look for friends in neither camp. iN evertheless, as the principle I have enunciated really effects the reconciliation of two lines of thought, apparently hopelessly divergent, I may, perhaps, expect to be sustained by those of both sides who prefer construction to destruction. It would be false modesty in me to seem unaware that the economic law I have attempted to establish equals in its influence upon economic conclusions any hitherto ascertained.
