Entered his father’s house of business, but gave it up to follow art-. Student and first-class medallist, Royal Academy Schools. Exhibitor R.A. New Gallery, and other leading Galleries since 1870.
Master of Antique School, Slade School, University College, under Sir E. J. Poynter, President of the Royal Academy and Master of Arts Legros. Founder of the Chiswick School of Art in 1880, in conjunction with E. S. Burchett, Perspective Lecture at the Schools, South Kensington. Member of Art Workers’ Guild, 1887.
Society of Decorative Designers (committee) from its formation. Vice president 1903; Cantor Lecturer, 1907. Examiner to the Board of Education in principles of design.
Has of late years given special attention to decoration and design, writing and lecturing also upon technical and archaeological subjects. Practises, in addition to easel picture-painting, in oil and water colour, ecclesiastical decoration, and design for many purposes.
