(Level: Intermediate to Advancing Intermediate Piano. Lyri...)
Level: Intermediate to Advancing Intermediate Piano. Lyrics in German and English. The composer wrote, concerning the performance of the work, "these five songs are intended as one inseparate unit, and in performing them their continuity should not be interfered with". Mahler selected five of Rückert's poems to set as Lieder, which he composed between 1901 and 1904. The songs are written in Mahler's late-romantic idiom, and like the texts reflect a mixture of feelings: anguish, fantasy resuscitation of the children, resignation. The final song ends in a major key and a mood of transcendence.

Ruckert was born at Schweinfurt, Bavaria, May 16, 1788.
He attended the universities of Wurzburg, Heidelberg, and Jena, studying chiefly Classical languages and literatures.
Beginning in 1811, he lectured for a brief period at the University of Jena; after 1819 he devoted himself with the greatest distinction to Oriental studies, in 1827, at the University of Erlangen, and, from 1841 until his retirement in 1848, at the University of Berlin.
Ruckert's lyrics, almost unrivaled in German letters as to volume, first attracted attention in 1814 when his Geharnischte Sonette ("Ironclad Sonnets") appeared.
Inspired by the War of Liberation, these patriotic poems achieved great popularity.
In 1821, in the collection LiebesfrühlingLiebesfruhling ("Love's Springtime"), Ruckert's most popular love poems appeared; Kindertotenlieder ("Dirges at the Death of Children"), published posthumously, contains eloquent expressions of a bereaved father's grief; among the best of his works are his aphorisms, Die Weisheit des Brahmanen (1836 - 1839) ("The Wisdom of the Brahman").
Mastering all important Oriental languages save Chinese, RückertRuckert was the first German translator of many of the most important poets of the East, especially of the Persians and Arabs.
In 1826 there appeared his adaptation of the works of the Arabian poet, Hariri, and in 1828 was published his Nal und Damajanti after the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata.
He continued his creative writing and his researches during his retirement until the very end of his life. RückertRuckert died at Neuses on January 31, 1866.
