Cassiodorus often refers in them to tho more comprehensive compilations of Boethius; his dialectic is mainly taken from Boethius and Apuleins. Isidorus Hispalensis (died 636) furthered the encyclopedic studies by his Encyclopedia, and, in particular, following in the lead of Cassiodorus and Boethius, he carried forward the logical tradition of the schools by devoting the second book of his Encyclopedia to rhetoric and dialectic, both which subjects ho included under the name of logic. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(By Modern Philosophy is meant philosophy since the discon...)
By Modern Philosophy is meant philosophy since the discontinuance of its condition of subserviency to theology (which characterized it in its scholastic form), in its gradual development into an independent science, having for its subject the essence and laws of nature and mind,as enriched and deepened by prior growths, and exerting an influence upon contemporaneous investigations in positive science and upon social life, and being in turn reacted upon by these. Its chief di^^isions are: 1. The Transitional Period, beginning with the renewal of Platonism; 2. The epoch of Empiricism, Dogmatism, and Skepticism, from Bacon and Descartes to the Encyclopedists and Hume; and 3. The epoch of the Kantian Criticism and of the systems issuing from it, from Kant till the present time. Besides the authors of the comprehensive historical works cited above. Vol. I., § 4, p. 8 seq. (PREFACE. DR. UEBERWEG'S Grundriss de?' Geschichte der Phi...)
PREFACE. DR. UEBERWEG'S Grundriss de?' Geschichte der Philosophie, in three parts, was first published at Berlin, 1862 to 'G6. It met with such approval, notwithstanding the competition with other able compends, that the first part has already reached a fourth edition (1871). Since Tennemann's Manual (1812, 5th edition by 'Vend, 1829),* no work has appeared so well adapted to meet the wants of students. Indeed, no work on the subject contains such a careful collection of authorities and citations, or so full a bibliographical apparatus. The opinions of the various schools and their contrasted principles, as well as the views of individual philosophers, are presented with clearness and precision. This is the great value of the work. It is not 'written, like some histories of philosophy, to propound or fortify the special theories of the author. It shows a full mastery of the whole course of philosophic thought, with independent inyestigations and criticisms. philosopher university professor
He was born in Leichlingen, in Rhenish Prussia, where his father was a Lutheran pastor.
University of Göttingen.
Educated at Göttingen and Berlin, he qualified at Bonn as Privatdozent in philosophy (1852). In 1862 he was called to Königsberg as extraordinary professor, and in 1867 he was promoted to the ordinary grade. Ueberweg died in Königsberg in 1871.
His own mode of thought he preferred later to describe as an ideal realism, which refused to reduce reality to thought, but asserted a parallelism between the forms of existence and the forms of knowledge.
Beneke and Friedrich Schleiermacher exercised most influence upon the development of his thought.
He was a prominent German philosopher and historian of philosophy. His compendious History of Philosophy is remarkable for fullness of information, conciseness, accuracy and impartiality.

(PREFACE. DR. UEBERWEG'S Grundriss de?' Geschichte der Phi...)
At first he followed Friedrich Eduard Beneke"s empiricism, and strongly opposed the subjectivistic tendency of the Kantian system, maintaining in particular the objectivity of space and time, which involved him in a somewhat violent controversy.
