He was well-versed in classic Japanese literature, he travelled widely to observe the prevailing conditions. In 1863, upon reports that the Imperial Court was planning to overthrow the Shogunate, he organized the Tenchiigumi together withTorataro Yoshimura and Keido Matsumoto, with Tadamitsu Yamanaka, as the top leader. He was killed in a clash between the loyalist band and Shogunate forces.
