He graduated from Tokyo University in 1895 where he studied Chinese classic literature.
Career
He went to China and founded the Tobun Gakusha School in Shanghai and a higher normal school in Soochow. Appointed professor at Peking University. Returned to Japan after the Chinese revolution broke out in 1911 and became professor at Waseda University in 1921 and professor at Tokyo University in 1924, lecturing on Oriental history.
