Background
Fujiwara no Muchimaro was the ancestor of the Nanke (South House) of the Fujiwara family and the eldest son of Fuhito. Because his house was located to the south of his younger brother, Fusasaki’s (Ancestor of the Hokuke or North House), his family was called Nanke.
Career
He was made Minister of the Right in 734 and died in 737 from small-pox in spite of the prayers for his recovery of Emperor Shomu and his proclamation of amnesty to back up his prayers.
Religion
An ardent Buddhist, he was responsible for the building of the Eizanji Temple in Yamato (Nara Prefecture).
