Background
Asakura was born and raised in the village of Asaji (now part of the city of Bungo-ōno) in Oita Prefecture in western Kyushu, Japan.

Asakura was born and raised in the village of Asaji (now part of the city of Bungo-ōno) in Oita Prefecture in western Kyushu, Japan.
While at school, he won the first prize in a contest for a bronzo statue of Viscount Nire.
He set up a studio in Tokyo's Yanaka neighborhood, and began his sculpting career, entering the annual Bunten competitions of the Japan Art Academy. Appointed professor at his alma mater in 1921.
