Background
Furuta Oribe was the son of Shigesada who served Hideyoshi Toyotomi, he was lord of Matsuzaka Castle in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). His father, as master of tea ceremony to Hideyoshi, was granted a fief of 3,000 koku.

Oribe studied tea ceremony under the great master, Sen-no-Rikyu.
In the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Furuta Oribe sided with the Tokugawas and was granted a fief of 10,000 koku. Suspected of friendliness to the Toyotomis, he killed himself by order of the Toku- gawa Shogunate.
