Not content with the life of a page he moved to Yokohama and opened a small grocery store. Later (1873) through the recommendations of a friend found a job with the Mitsui concern, and through dint of hard work soon got himself placed in an important position with the firm. Resigned from the company due to illness (1881) and founded Osaka Steamship Co. and became manager for a group of newspapers. Realizing the importance of trade with Australia, he visited that country (1887) and upon return established a trading company at Kobe. After much hardships he was able to make his business a success.
