Shinno Sadanaru was a Japanese Imperial Prince. Fourteenth son of Prince Kuniie and 21st head of the House of Fushimi-no-Miya.
Background
Prince Sadanaru was born on February 4, 1858 in Kyoto, Japan, as the fourteenth son of Prince Fushimi Kuniie and the second son of Princess Takatsukasa Hiroko, he was thus the half brother of Prince Yamashina Akira, Prince Kuni Asahiko, Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa, and Prince Kan'in Kotohito.
Education
Studied in France and at the Military Preparatory School.
Career
He was commissioned a lieutenant (1874). Participated in the suppression of rebels in Kagoshima as a staff officer. Commanded the Fourth Infantry Brigade which fought at Weihaiwei and Formosa in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895).
In the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), he commanded the First Division which fought at Chinchow. Was promoted to full general and appointed a member of the Military Council. Represented Emperor Taisho at the funeral in London of Edward VII.
Earlier, he had visited Britain as an envoy to express thanks for the Order of the Garter presented to the Emperor and to Russia on the occasion of the coronation of Nicolas II. Was promoted to field marshal (1915). Was Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal for three years and patron of various organizations including the Butokukai (Martial Sports Association), Agricultural Association and Army Officers Club.
Connections
In 1872, Prince Fushimi Sadanaru married Princess Arisugawa Toshiko (1858–1927), the daughter of Prince Arisugawa Takahito, with whom he had two sons. Two concubines bore Prince Hiroyasu and Princess Sachiko respectively.
