Gabriel Ferrier studied painting at the École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where his teachers were Ernest Hébert and Isidore Pils. He was also a student of the French Academy in Rome between 1873 and 1876.
Ferrier's first exhibition was held at the Salon in 1869. After several years spent in Italy, the artist returned to France, where he focused on painting portraits of notable figures connected with the Third Republic. In 1883, he made an extended trip to Algeria, where he created a number of artworks in the Orientalist style. Some of those works he displayed at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.
He later became a professor of design at the Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur, and then worked as a lecturer at the École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, succeeding Jean-Léon Gérôme. He also was a professor at the Académie Julian (now part of ESAG Penninghen).
Gabriel Ferrier was an outstanding artist notable for his numerous works and also a distinguished educator. Among his best-known students included Paul-Émile Bécat, Luis Ricardo Falero, Roger Bissière, André Fau, and Albert Lynch.
During his long-lasting career, the artist received numerous awards and prizes, including - the National Order of the Legion of Honour in 1911. His murals still adorn Paris Hotel de Ville, the Museum d'Orsay (Paris), the French Embassy in Berlin, the Sorbonne, Opera-Comeque, theaters in Nimes and Monte Carlo.
Many artworks by the artist have been sold at auction, including his painting Judith, which was sold at Sotheby's New York "19th Century European Art" in 2014 for $87,500.
