Gakuo was born approximately in 1460 in Japan.
Gakuo Zokyu is surmised to have lived during the Ōnin Era that lasted from 1467 to 1468. He was a painter who used Japanese black ink in his works. Gakuo Zokyu belonged to the Shūbun school and a contemporary of Sōtan. Shūbun was a priest-painter and a key figure in the development of monochromatic ink painting in Japan. He had a great influence on Gakuō’s manner of painting.
Some experts are of the opinion that Gakuō was Shūbun himself as his works resemble those of the master, though they are not so minute in detail and are somewhat coarse and rugged. His works that are still existent are stamped with characters reading "Gakuō" though some bearing the seal "Zōgaku" are also said to be his works.
