Ganjiro I was born in 1860 in Osaka, Japan.
A disciple of Enjaku Jitsukawa I, he made his debut in 1875 and assumed the name of Ganjiro in 1878. Was the most popular Kabuki actor in the Kansai District through the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. He was considered without parallel in plays of shinju, or double suicides of lovers, of Monzaemon Chikamatsu.
Ganjiro I had a son: Ganjiro II Nakamura.
