(This study surveys systematically the full scope of Melan...)
This study surveys systematically the full scope of Melanesian religion, from traditional beliefs and practices to the development of strong indigenous Christian churches and theology. Garry Trompf writes from extensive knowledge of the social and religious aspects and from his own experience living and working in Papua New Guinea. Melanesian Religion provides an invaluable guide and analysis to pressing issues of religious and social change in the Pacific. It provides a useful overview for readers with general interests in the South Pacific region, and in the formulation of indigenous responses to external institutions, beliefs and value systems. The Melanesian peoples of the south-west Pacific form about one-quarter of the world's cultures - cultures in which a deep sense of spiritual consciousness has engendered rich diversity of religious experience. Professor Trompf argues that, to be complete, any interpretation of the social and economic patterns of Melanesian life, past and present, must take proper account of this religious context.

(Delving into the interpretive 'tool-kit' of the earliest ...)
Delving into the interpretive 'tool-kit' of the earliest Christian historians, the author identifies and explores the logic of retribution that pervades their records of the past. In the Old Testament, for example, God blessed those who kept his commandments and requited those who turned against them. The author argues that the writings of the Early Christian historians reflects this logic and goes on to compare this development with pagan history-writing. He also explores the conflict between retributive logic and what began to emerge as the central features of the Christian faith: forgiveness and redemption.

(In this ambitious study, the first monograph on religion ...)
In this ambitious study, the first monograph on religion and "the logic of retribution," Professor Trompf shows how various aspects of "payback," both negative and positive, provide the best indices to an understanding of Melanesian views of life. The book explores the reasons why people "pay back" and opens up a whole new dimension in the cross-cultural study of human consciousness. The author conducts his readers through the most complex anthropological pageant on earth, illustrating his arguments from western New Guinea to Fiji.

(This work identifies and explores the "logic of retributi...)
This work identifies and explores the "logic of retribution" that pervades Christian records of the past. In the Old Testament, for example, the unfolding of narratives was intended to reveal how God blessed those who kept his commandments and requited those who turned against them. The writings of the early Christian historians reflected this logic. Trompf analyzes the related, if oppositional, development of Christian and Pagan history-writing from the first of the Christian historians. He also explores the conflict between the retributive logic of these early Christian historians and what began to emerge as the central features of Chrstian faith: forgiveness and redemption.
