Gary J. Kennedy is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Psychogeriatric Fellowship Training Program at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York. He is also Supervising Psychiatrist of the Geriatric Unit at Bronx Psychiatric Center.
He started his career at the University of Texas Health Science Center as an intern. Then he worked as an instructor at Veterans Administration, resident at Bexar County and Audie Murphy Veterans Administration Hospitals, San Antonio, Texas, United States. He worked as an instructor at Yeshiva University, Albert Einstein College, of Medicine, Bronx, New York, United States, (1979-1984), also there he was an assistant professor (1984-1989), currently professor of psychiatry and behavioral science, research fellow in division of aging and geriatric psychiatry, (1982-1984). At the Montefiore Medical Center, he worked as a research fellow in liaison-psychosomatic psychiatry (1979-1981), assistant attending physician (1979-1988), psychobiology research fellow, (1980-1982), since 1984 he has been head of psychiatry section for geriatric associates program, currently director of division of geriatric psychiatry and fellowship training program. At the New York Academy of Medicine, he was a member of faculty for continuing medical education (1982-1986). Since 1997 he has been an affiliated scientist at Duke University, Center for Religion/Spirituality and Health. Since 1998 he has been a guest faculty member at New York University.
Gary J. Kennedy was a member of the ethics committee (1992-1995) and supervising psychiatrist for the geriatric unit at Bronx Psychiatric Center.
He was a member of the ethics committee at Beth Abraham Hospital, in 1994-1996, a member of the mental health advisory committee for geriatric training, New York Office of Mental Health, and New York State Technical Advisory Group on Mental Health Services in Nursing Homes, (both 1989). He also was a member of the Department of Health Work Group on Research involving Human Subjects Incapable of Providing Informed Consent, State of New York (1997-1998).
Kennedy was a member of advisory board on improvement of communications about end-of-life care in New York City nursing homes, New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, 2000; member of expert panel for determination of decisionmaking capacity, New York University (1995-1996); Doctor-Proxy Relationship, member of national advisory board, 1997-1998. He was a member of the national advisory board in Project Supporting and Facilitating Proxy Decision Making, (1997-1998).
In 1997 he was a member of the expert panel for guidelines on agitation in the elderly at the National Knowledge Improvement Foundation.
Kennedy was a member of the research group at Hastings Center institute of Society, Ethics, and the Life Sciences in 1986-1987. He also was a member of board of directors at Hodson Community Center (1990-1993), a member of community mental health advisory board, Visiting Nurse Services (1990-1997), member of the committee on legal problems of the aging at Association of the Bar of the City of New York (1990-97), and committee on bioethical issues, (1995-1997).
He was a member of protective services for adults advisory committee at the City of New York Human Resources Administration (1990-1993). In 1997 he was a member of the board of directors at New York City Long Term Care Ethics Network. In 2000 Kennedy was a member of the New York advisory board at Alzheimer’s Association. He also was a member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and a consultant to the New York State Office of Court Administration.
Gary J. Kennedy is best known as the Director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and of the Fellowship Training Program at Montefiore Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. Dr. Kennedy is board certified in Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. He is a past president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and a past chair of the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation.
More than 30 psychiatrists have completed geriatric training under his direction. Dr. Kennedy's research and teaching have focused on cardiac arrhythmias, the epidemiology of depression and dementia, and mental health care in nursing homes and in the community.
Dr. Kennedy is a recipient of an Award for Excellence in Program Innovation from the Archstone Foundation, an Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for Mental Illness, and the Julia and Leo Forchheimer Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. His research has focused on suicidal ideation, the epidemiology of depression and dementia, psychiatric services in primary care, and novel approaches to bridge community-based agencies and academic medical centers. His book Geriatric Mental Health Care: A Treatment Guide for Health Professionals received a Book of the Year Award in Gerontology from the American Journal of Nursing and in 2014 was listed as one of 100 Great Books for the Social Worker's Library by MSWOnlinePrograms.
He has served as a consultant to the New York State Commission on Life and the Law regarding physician-assisted suicide and to the Law Revision Commission regarding guardianship procedures in New York State mental health law and was a member of the New York State Department of Health Advisory Work Group on Human Subject Research Involving Protected Classes.
He has appeared on National Public Radio and the Today Show with Katie Couric.
In 2003, he was invited to testify before the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.
The American Journal of Nursing cited his Geriatric Mental Health Care, published in 2000, as one of the best books of the year in gerontology.
Since 1992, he has been listed as one of The Best Doctors in America.

He has authored numerous publications on late-life mental health and has given numerous invited presentations to educational, scientific, and public policy organizations in the United States and abroad.
