Geert Ludzer Mak was born on December 4, 1946 in Vlaardingen, Netherlands; the son of Catherinus Mak, a reverend in Orthodox Dutch Reformed Church, and Geertje Mak.
Geert Mak attended the Reformed Gymnasium in Leeuwarden. From 1965 on he studied law and sociology at the VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam.
For many years Geert Mak worked as an editor and correspondent for leading print and electronic publications - the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer, the daily Handelsblad and the television and radio broadcasting company VRPO. From 2000 to 2003 Geert was a professor in the department of metropolitan studies at the University of Amsterdam. Mak’s first book, Amsterdam Dream, was dedicated to the city’s problems and was published in 1985. Since then, he has written nearly two dozen books. The brilliant style of an experienced journalist, deep knowledge and understanding of the history of his country made his name incredibly popular. The books Amsterdam: A Brief Life of the City, My Father’s Century and In Europe brought him real fame. Their circulation reached several hundred thousand copies. Dutch schoolchildren study their country's history using a textbook written by Geert Mak in collaboration with two other historians.
Geert Ludzer Mak has been listed as a notable Journalist writer by Marquis Who's Who. His books have been translated into dozens of languages of the world, and the author himself has been awarded many national and foreign literary prizes, including the Henriötte Roland Holst Prize, NS Public Prize (twice), Leipziger Buchpreis zur Europaische Verstandigung. The city of Amsterdam awarded its historiographer the prestigious IJ Award. Mack twice received the honorary title “Historian of the Year” in his homeland, and in France he was awarded the Legion of Honor for his personal contribution to the process of pan-European unity.
