( Local school boards in the United States spend almost $...)
Local school boards in the United States spend almost $600 billion of the public’s money and employ millions of Americans. They have a prime role, along with the home, in shaping the future for the country’s young. Yet the more than 14,000 boards of education are obscure and most people have not the vaguest notion of how they operate and what impact they have. School Boards in America aims to provide a wide audience – educators and college students, board members, policymakers, parents and other taxpayers, and just about anyone interested in public affairs – with an inside view that will forever affect the ways in which they look at public schools and how they are governed.

( In Altered Destinies, Gene Maeroff poses important ques...)
In Altered Destinies, Gene Maeroff poses important questions about what is needed to equalize the tremendous imbalance between the education received by middle to upper class children and the education received by lower class children. He argues that, in addition to greater financial investment in their schools, lower class children must possess a strong support system--what he refers to as "social capital"--which emphasizes four areas: a sense of connectedness, a sense of well-being, a sense of academic initiative, and a sense of knowing. Maeroff builds a compelling case for how and why the concept of social capital will make a difference in the effort to improve opportunities for disadvantaged schoolchildren.

Scholarship Assessed continues the exploration begun by Scholarship Reconsidered. It examines the changing nature of scholarship in today's colleges and universities and proposes new standards with a special emphasis on methods for assessment and documentation. Begun under the oversight of Ernest L. Boyer, and based on the findings of the Carnegie Foundation's National Survey on the Reexamination of Faculty Roles and Rewards, Scholarship Assessed provides a base of information for and gives focus to the debate of institutional standards of rigor and quality.
