Gennady worked as a swimming coach and a physical education teacher at the school. Then - in the leading positions in physical culture and sports organizations: the chairman of the Shatura city sports committee, instructor, head of the department, deputy chairman of the Moscow regional committee of physical culture and sports.
Since 1986 he was the head of the Department of Water and Applied Sports of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic). Since 1991 - the head of the department of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). From 18.07.1995 to 18.07.2001 he had been the vice-president of the ROC. Since 18.07.2001 - the 1st Vice-President of the ROC. Gennady is a member of the working group of the Council for Physical Culture and Sports under the President of the Russian Federation.
07.06.2008 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation. In 1900-1992 - the president of the Federation of Swimming of the USSR, from 1992 to January 2006 – the president of All-Russian Swimming Federation, since 2006 – president of Water Sports Association; Member of the Bureau of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), Vice-President of the European Swimming Federation (LEN). He served in the Armed Forces of the USSR.
