Background
Gentan Sugita was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1818. He was a son of Shimmin Bando, physician of the Owari Clan.

Education
He became a disciple of Ryukei Sugita, physician of the Dutch school (1834) and later was adopted by him.
Career
For his knowledge of Dutch medicine, he was employed by the Shogunate's Bansho Torishirabe-dokoro (Western Book Research Office) (1858) and was received by Shogun Iesada. He was later appointed an instructor at the Kaiseijo school of the Shogunate and served as a translator under the Shogunate magistrate of foreign affairs.
Later he declined a request to serve the new Imperial government for reasons of health (1868) and opened hospitals in Numazu (Shizuoka Prefecture) and Tokyo.
Membership
He became a member of the Imperial Academy (1880).
