Ogata Masanori graduated from the Kumamoto Medical School and studied in Germany at the request of the government. Returned to Japan (1884) after studying physiology and hygiene.
Lectured at his alma mater on physiology and bacteriology. Received his doctorate (1888) and went to Formosa (1896) to study the bubonic plague. His research there in the germ of that disease and channels of its contagion contributed much to its prevention. From 1890 until 1901, he was dean of the Medical Department, Tokyo University. In his late years, he studied tsutsugamushi disease, a rickettsial fever endemic in Japan.
