Gentatsu Hamada was born on January 14, 1854 in in Kumamoto Prefecture, he was the son of Gensai Hamada, physician of the Kumamoto Clan.

In 1880, he graduated from Tokyo University.
After graduating from university was appointed director of the Kumamoto Medical School and director of its attached hospital. In 1884, went to Germany. A gynecologist, he successfully included the Government authorities to establish a midwifery school in the university hospital of Tokyo. Was appointed subsequently professor at Tokyo University and dean of its Medical School. In 1889, after resigning from the university, he founded the Hamada Hospital. Served the Imperial Household Department. Published many books.
