Geoffrey Block was born on May 7, 1948, in Oakland, California, United States. He is the son of Stanley Block, a lawyer, and Ruth Ann (Schnipper) Block, an elementary school teacher.

Block graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, as Bachelor of Arts, in 1970. He also obtained Master of Arts degree at the Harvard University, in 1973, and Doctor of Philosophy degree, six years later.
Geoffrey Block worked as a director of music at the school in Ojai, California, from 1977 till 1980.
He moved to the University of Puget Sound, beginning as an assistant professor, and became a professor of music, in 1980, as well.
He served as the general editor and contributed to the forewords of seven Yale Broadway Masters volumes, from 2003 to 2010, and eight volumes and forewords since 2010 for Oxford’s Broadway Legacies.
Nowadays Block teaches courses on Broadway, jazz, drama, film, Beethoven, Wagner’s Ring, and historically-based music classes.
Block is a member of American Musicological Society and Sonneck Society.
Block married Jacqueline Lee Kulwin, a piano teacher, on June 27, 1982. The couple has 2 children - Jessamyn Halil and Eliza Danielle.
