( In this classic account of Robert Bruce's life and care...)
In this classic account of Robert Bruce's life and career, Professor Barrow describes the interplay and tension between Bruce and the concept of a Scottish nation of which Bruce aspired to be leader. He demonstrates the unity of purpose which linked the efforts of church leaders, nobles and free-holders throughout the period 1290 to 1329, as together they conducted a single-minded campaign to defend the freedom of the Scottish realm against English arms and armed onslaught.

(The story of how Robert Bruce outwitted Edward I, the shr...)
The story of how Robert Bruce outwitted Edward I, the shrewd and ruthless King of England, defeated his son Edward II, and in doing so regained Scotland's independence.Professor Barrow describes the dazzling and tragic career of William Wallace, the English military occupation of Scotland that was its consequence, and the emergence of Robert Bruce as the centre of Scottish resistance. (This classic edition is the definitive history of Robert ...)
This classic edition is the definitive history of Robert Bruce's life and career, during Scotland's tumultuous coming of age in the Wars of Independence, and one of the twentieth century's bona-fide classics in historical writing. It tells the story of how Robert Bruce outwitted Edward I, defeated his son, Edward II and in so doing secured independence for Scotland. First published in 1965, ROBERT BRUCE was quickly recognised as an indispensable guide to understanding Scotland's complex game of thrones and its medieval society. The central theme of this crucial work remains the interplay and tension between Bruce himself and the very concept of a Scottish nation, of which Bruce aspired to be king. The chief shift in emphasis in this history was to demonstrate the continuity and unity of purpose which linked the stake-holders of a nascent Scottish realm throughout the period from 1290 to 1329. In this bloody period of political intrigue, battlefield heroism and variable loyalties, a singularly Scottish identity was born in campaigns against English claims, culminating in the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314, the fulcrum around which Bruce built a nation and a Scottish peace.

(This book explores the formative period when Scotland acq...)
This book explores the formative period when Scotland acquired the characteristics that enabled it to enter fully into the comity of medieval Christendom. These included a monarchy of a recognisably continental type, a feudal organisation of aristocratic landholding and military service, national boundaries, and a body of settled law and custom. By the end of the thirteenth century Scotland had a church based on territorial dioceses and parishes, centres of learning including monastic houses representing the main orders of western Europe, and thriving urban communities whose economic power counterbalanced the aristocracy's. How and to what effect these characteristics were acquired are the main subjects of the book. After the introduction eighteen chapters are divided into three parts devoted to government, church and society. The volume comprises some of the most important as well as the most consistently readable work ever published on medieval Scotland. First published in 1973, it is now reissued
