George Bauer gained prominence in the field of philosophy as a scholar of existentialism. Mr. Bauer received a Ful-bright scholarship in 1955 to study at the University of Grenoble in France.
In 1961, after serving as a colonel with the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence, Mr. Bauer accepted a position teaching French at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. After several other teaching posts, he arrived at the University of Southern California in 1977. Mr. Bauer retired in 1983.
George Bauer lectured on the existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, artist Marcel Duchamp, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau, among others, across the globe. He contributed numerous articles to journals and Critical Bibliography of French Literature and wrote a number of books.
