Mr. McMurrin was born in Woods Cross, Utah, United States, on January 12, 1914. Mr. McMurrin's family moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1920s while he was at a young age.
Sterling M. McMurrin attended high school and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), but he gained his Bachelor of Arts in history and Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Utah. Returning to California for doctoral studies, the University of Southern California awarded him a Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy in 1946. Mr. McMurrin also did postdoctoral studies at Columbia University, Princeton University, and Union Theological Seminary.
Mr. McMurrin began his academic career in 1945 as an assistant professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California. From there he joined the faculty of the University of Utah in 1948, became Dean of the Graduate School in 1966, and E. E. Erichson Distinguished professor emeritus in 1987. A prolific author, Mr. McMurrin wrote or edited numerous books on philosophy, religion, and history, including The Patterns of Our Religious Faiths, A History of Philosophy, The Philosophical Foundations of Mormon Theology, The Schools and the Challenge of Innovation, and Resources for Urban Schools: Better Use and Balance.
A former commissioner of education, Sterling McMurrin was active in promoting school desegregation and equal opportunities for women and minorities during the 1960s.
In Mr. McMurrin's noted career, he worked with universities, large corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies, as a teacher, an administrator, and an advisor.
