Since 1974 he has lived in New York City, where he works as a freelance photographer. In 1973-74, he was J. Frederick Smith's studio manager. From 1967 to 1970 he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
Both his books, which he photographed and designed, were honored with AIGA awards, and his images have been published in many American and European magazines.
Bennett specialized in “narrative serial photography" in his books, which he also designed, and in his editorial photographs.
